As academic and spiritual learners, we’ve all experienced moments in a group setting where we are able to learn at the same pace as those around us. But, more frequently, this is not the case. We are either ready to move forward before the rest of the group or we simply need more time to fully process and understand. Both of these scenarios cause frustration in learning. Holding back groups of learners to give one or two students more time isn’t ideal. Pushing students to keep up when they simply need more time to process ideas, learn skills and ask questions is also less than ideal.
At Refine KC, our small class sizes allow our teachers to make learning more personalized.
Our approach is to meet students where they are both academically and spiritually in order to make learning personalized rather than placing students in classes only by grade levels. Through pre-assessments and working daily with students, teachers gain insight about each student’s knowledge, understanding and learning style.
Quality teachers play a critical role in personalized learning.
They start by teaching content from a Biblical worldview to the whole group. Then, the class may break into smaller collaborative groups where support and further instruction is implemented. Our teachers support student learning by scaffolding skills and objectives so that students demonstrate the appropriate level of mastery before moving on. By leveraging a variety of learning techniques, activities and assessments, our teachers foster our students’ abilities to become advocates in their own learning. Through this environment of collaboration, self-reflection, setting goals and using feedback, students are actively engaged in their learning.
The personalized learning environment at Refine KC gives our students the best possible opportunity for success because our students will develop the skills to pursue their learning needs.
Our model challenges students to pursue their personal best while achieving strong critical thinking skills. Our expectation is for students to develop a thirst for understanding the value of what they are learning. Refine KC has graduation requirements that meet or exceed state standards.
